Six-Year Walk To Alaska: George Meegan treks 19,021 miles on foot; journey reshapes his life

George Meegan was 24 when he stepped away from the southern tip of South America in January 1977 with an unusually ambitious destination in mind: Alaska. Meegan, a young British merchant sailor from Rainham, England, wanted to walk the length of the Western Hemisphere, a route that would take him through some of the most remote and politically unstable parts of America. He completed the journey in September 1983 after covering 19,019 miles on foot.
