Six cheap holiday destinations for UK travellers where the pound is strongest

British holidaymakers are facing very different prospects as they travel the world with the pound in free fall.

Last month, the pound fell to a low not seen since 1985 when it plummeted to £1.03 against the dollar. The currency has been resuscitated - slightly - but it's miles away from previous highs seen when sterling has been worth double the dollar.

No surprise then that travellers would set their sights on destinations where GBP can be stretched to its fullest. While US holidays are pricier than they have been in decades, there are countries where the pound is stronger now than this time last year.

Indeed, the pound hasn't flailed everywhere across the globe. There are a number of destinations where travellers won't need to tighten their belts.

According to City AM, some of the currencies weak against sterling are the Turkish lira, Japanese yen, and the Swedish krona. Read on for the holiday hotspots where British travellers can stretch the pound.

Turkey

Already favoured by British tourists, Turkey is a stunning destination less than about a four hours' flight away and, handily, it is where the pound has grown the most - up 76 percent to the lira last month when compared to September 2021.

From the sights of Istanbul's Hagia Sophia to the beaches of Antalya, travellers looking for a cultural city break to a beach holiday can find somewhere beautiful to go in Turkey.

Sri Lanka

Coming in second is Sri Lanka where GBP is up by 52 percent in the last year. Holidaymakers can relax in a resort on palm-fringed beaches, sightsee Buddhist or Hindu temples, or venture to a tea plantation in the mountains.

Argentina

Another more affordable destination further afield is Argentina where the pound is over 22 percent stronger than the peso.

Brits can touch down in Buenos Aires for a taste of proper Argentinian barbecue or drink in the glorious views of Patagonia whilst visiting a penguin colony along the way.

Hungary

City break to Budapest, anyone? Hungary's forint has fallen against sterling by 10.5 percent. Brits can cash in on an affordable trip to enjoy the capital's nightlife, thermal spas and Christmas markets - or backpack off the beaten path to the country's charming towns.

Japan

If Japan is one of your dream destinations, it could be worth making that daydream a reality. Not only is the Japanese yen weak - the pound is 9.6 percent stronger against it than last year - the country has just fully reopened to tourism for the first time since the pandemic.

Sweden

Just a short hop away is Sweden where GBP has strengthened by almost five percent since 2021. Your Scandinavian holiday could entail a city break to Stockholm or Oslo, marking the longest day of the year with Sweden's midsummer celebrations, or catching the Northern Lights.
