A candid Ash Barty has detailed how the despair of her most deflating Melbourne Park defeat also proved the catalyst for her magical, career-defining Australian Open triumph.

As the summer of tennis approaches, the retired great is vowing to emerge from her "boring happy life" to support teenage sensation Maya Joint - and Australia's other home hopes - at the season-opening grand slam starting on January 18.
