Sir Gerhard is expected to be the favourite for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' hurdle at the Cheltenham festival this year.
The seven-year-old horse was initially expected to compete in the Ballymore race on day two of the festival. However, support for the Willie Mullins trained horse has seen it become favourite for the first race of the festival at 2/1.
Sir Gerhard takes over from Constitution Hill as the favourite for the festival opener, with Nicky Henderson's contender now at 5/2. Mullins' other horse in the race Dysart Dynamo comes in at 11/4.
William Hill spokesperson Tony Kenny said "It seemed as if Sir Gerhard was destined for the Ballymore on Wednesday, but all the support for Willie Mullins’ horse in the last 24 hours has been in the Supreme market.
“It’s been pretty strong support too and in fact Sir Gerhard has now surpassed Constitution Hill as the favourite for the Festival opener at 2/1, with Nicky Henderson’s contender a 5/2 chance.
“Might the money for Sir Gerhard in the Supreme mean Dysart Dynamo heads to Wednesday’s Ballymore? Well, he’s now just 15/8 for that contest as punters try to guess which way Mullins is leaning.”
Mullins, the most successful trainer in Cheltenham's history, will be hoping that Sir Gerhard will add to his astonishing tally of 78 winners in his Cheltenham career.
