Sir Alex Ferguson might still have one great Manchester United team talk up his sleeve

Sir Alex Ferguson has masterminded many of Manchester United’s greatest moments and the former Old Trafford boss could have a role to play in next month’s FA Cup final.

United face neighbours City at Wembley on June 3 with Pep Guardiola’s side going for an historic treble. They are favourites for the Premier League and face Real Madrid in the semi finals of the Champions League.

United completed the treble City are aiming to emulate in 1999 and one of the heroes of that campaign believes Fergie might have a role to play in preserving that achievement. Teddy Sheringham, who netted a late equaliser in the 1999 Champions League final as the Reds famously scored twice in the dying seconds to down Bayern Munich, can see his old manager making a move ahead of this season’s FA Cup final.

“Fergie will not want to see City land treble,” said Sheringham, speaking to Lord Ping. “I think outside interest will ensure that the United players have extra motivation – some of my old teammates will give them that and of course Fergie still has an influence and is very much around the club.

“I can see him stepping into the dressing room and having a few words with the players. Fergie will not want City to win a treble."

Former United striker Sheringham admits City are in pole position to secure three trophies but the 57-year-old envisages some twists and turns into the final matches of the campaign.

"I’m not worried about City winning the treble,” Sheringham added. “This City side are phenomenal. They're a phenomenal team and they deserve to be up there competing for it. There's still a long way to go.

"You've still got to get the rub of the green. They have to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League. Little things can happen in football and everything changes. Manchester City are there; they’ve given themselves a chance.

"Obviously, I’m hoping that the treble is one step too far for them, but with every match that goes by that prospect becomes less of a reality. It’s looking good for them at the moment.”
