Researchers in China asked people with a rare and socially punishing belching disorder to sing Chinese folk songs for five minutes, three times a day, for one week. Then they compared the results against the breathing exercise clinical guidelines currently recommend.
Singing won, and not narrowly. After one week, 72.2% of the singing group had cut their symptom severity by at least half, compared with 38.9% of the breathing group. The gap held at the one-month follow-up, at 50.0% versus 30.6%.
