Sing out or keep schtum? After The Rock backed crooning in the cinemas – our culture writers clash over big-screen etiquette

Keep schtum, says India Block

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has waded into the debate on cinema etiquette, and I am afraid he is terribly wrong. The debate around the do’s and don’ts of going to the theatre (be that movie or otherwise) has been re-ignited over the opening week of Wicked, which prompted a rash of horrifying reports of people warbling along to the tunes and – the horror – taking photographs of the screen to share on social media.

Now the star of Moana 2, a movie musical for children, has weighed in. “Sing! You’ve paid your hard earned money for a ticket, and you've gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing," Johnson told BBC News. If Johnson were singing in my screening, I would not complain – the man has such a mellifluous voice that I have, on occasion, used it to wake up to via his official alarm clock app The Rock Clock. Also, he is a lot bigger than me and I am not sure I would be brave enough to tell him off.
