Simon Cowell jokes he should 'borrow helmet' from Scooter Boys after bike crash

Simon Cowell has joked he “might have to borrow” a helmet from Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists Scooter Boys four months after his electric bike crash.

The 62-year-old was rushed to hospital in February after he was propelled over the handlebars of an e-bike which was going 20mph.

The music mogul wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the accident near his home in west London.

A source told The Mirror Simon was “lucky to be alive” after the crash which left him bleeding and with a broken arm.

His latest accident comes just 18 months after he broke his back on an e-bike in Los Angeles.

Simon poked fun at his misfortune on Friday night’s Britain’s Got Talent as four youngsters performed daring scooter tricks.

Scooter Boys - a young scooter quartet, aged between 6 and 10 – took to the stage to try to impress the judges.

But as one of them took to the ramp, it all went horribly wrong when little Austin slipped and fell over.

There was silence at the London Palladium as someone rushed to pick him up and took him off stage.

For a minute it was touch and go –until production staff gave Simon the nod the little boy was ok.

Despite getting four yeses from the judges, Simon said he was “never letting Eric my son watch this audition”.

He continued: “The weird thing is I was out with Eric my son today and he was on one of these things and he said, ‘Daddy, do I have to wear a helmet?’”

Simon said he replied: “Yes. Yes, you do. And that’s why.”

One of the Scooter Boys then chimed in: “They’ve even got our names on it.”

“Well I might have to borrow one of those,” Simon quipped back in what appeared to be a reference to his own bike crash.

Unfortunately Scooter Boys were sent home, as comedian Axel Blake and child conservationist Aneeshwar Kunchala were sent through to Sunday night's final.

After his latest accident, Simon branded himself “a bit of a nutter” – and vowed to wear a helmet next time.

Speaking for the first time after his terrifying accident, Simon told MailOnline : "I'm OK. I'm feeling much better thank you. It happened just round the corner.

“'I'm a bit of a nutter. I'll definitely wear a helmet next time.”

Despite his second fall in less than two years, Simon is reportedly refusing to give up his beloved bike - much to the anguish of his 43-year-old fiancee Lauren Silverman.

The pair are set to tie the knot in London later this month – despite Simon vowing never to get married. They share eight-year-old son Eric.

•The Britain’s Got Talent final is on ITV on Sunday at 7.30pm
