Simba mattress and topper - are they worth spending money on for Black Friday?

Buying a new mattress is a big investment. Not only are they expensive to buy, you also can’t judge how much you’ll love (or hate) your next mattress just by looking at it online.

Luckily for us, the sleep experts at Simba have compiled data from over ten million sleepers to create mattresses that are designed for every sleeping style and body type.

With up to 60% off in their Black Friday sale, we’ve compared two of their most popular products to see which ones come out on top.

Just a new mattress or a bed in a box?

Long gone are the days of fighting with a king-size mattress as you try and negotiate it up the stairs. With bed-in-a-box mattresses having become very on-trend in recent years, the Simba mattress arrives at your door neatly packaged and compact enough to carry.

Gemma Sherlock was lucky enough to find one on her doorstep not so long ago and was able to share her thoughts on her new delivery. Having opted for the 12-time award-winning Simba Hybrid mattress, Gemma (like most of us) wasn’t quite sure how a full-size double mattress could be delivered in a tall, slim box.

The Simba Hybrid mattress (Simba)

Vacuum-packed for easy transportation, Gemma and her partner tore off the packing to let the mattress “rest” on the bed for 24 hours. Designed to expand over time, what started looking a little flat was soon a supremely comfy 31 cm deep mattress that has been manufactured to promote airflow and cooling comfort.

As Simba’s best-selling mattress, the Hybrid features five layers of loveliness including a 16cm foam core with a mini pocket-spring layer sandwiched between two layers of foam, topped with another 2.5cm of foam.

According to Simba, the Hybrid mattress has been designed to let the sleeper experience “ultimate comfort and airflow from up to 5,000 titanium Aerocoil® springs across two layers and unbeatable temperature regulation, thanks to the luxurious natural wool top layer”.

Having tested the mattress with its data-driven design and state-of-the-art technology, Gemma said: “I immediately felt comfortable when I went to bed the first night. The mattress does feel quite firm at first but as you lie there you can start to feel yourself sinking into it just the right amount.

“I sleep on my side so I was worried this mattress was going to be too firm for me but it has slowly moulded into my shape and I've slept much better than normal. I am very fidgety in my sleep too, and I've noticed a lot less movement - or so my partner tells me.”

Gemma also found that she was able to fall asleep much faster than she had done on her old mattress, and felt super secure and cosy as she slept. She said: “It would usually take me about 30 minutes to sometimes even two hours for my brain to let me sleep. But sleeping on the Hybrid after two weeks or so, I've found myself drifting off within 10-20 minutes max.

“I’ve also found that since getting this mattress my Fitbit has recorded a higher dosage of a deep sleep state, and I've also found times where I've actually looked forward to going to bed.”

Pro’s

  • The bed-in-a-box concept is genius – no need for delivery men traipsing through your home.
  • The mattress is really comfortable
  • The airflow and cooling capabilities make it feel more hygienic to sleep on

The Simba Essential Mattress Topper

If you don’t want to go the whole hog and shell out for a new mattress, Simba also offers mattress toppers that sit on your existing mattress to add extra comfort as you sleep.

I was fortunate enough to be able to try The Simba Hybrid® Essential Topper to see if it really could upgrade my failing mattress for the good night's sleep I’ve been longing for.

Arriving in a similar box arrangement to the larger mattress, it was lightweight enough for me to get up two flights of stairs, even on my own.

The Simba Hybrid Essentials Topper (Simba)

Much like the mattress, the topper needed to be left to “rest” on the bed while it expanded to its full size. Incorporating Simba’s award-winning Hybrid design, with up to 1,500 patented Aerocoil® springs for superior body support I was expecting good things at bedtime, and I was not disappointed.

Living in a three-storey house, the upstairs bedrooms can sometimes feel quite stuffy, but the Simba topper promises to offer exceptional cooling capabilities thanks to the open-cell foam that circulates 30x more airflow than traditional memory foam mattresses and natural graphite that draws excess heat away from the body.

But could it keep this sweat Betty cool and comfortable at night? Well, I have to say that like Gemma, I found I dropped off much quicker than I usually do. The topper immediately felt super soft and comfortable as I slipped beneath the sheets.

I did feel like I slept really well, and honestly, it has been the same every night since it arrived. Did it keep me cool? While old-fashioned memory foam mattresses used to feel really warm and sticky, I can honestly say that the topper felt cool and super comfortable all night long.

The topper is kept in place by four stretchy elastics at each corner that slip over your existing mattress. They seem to keep it in place for the most part, but I did find it started to slide down the bed after a couple of nights' sleep.

All in all, the Hybrid mattress topper from Simba has transformed my old mattress into a thing of wonder. The only thing I would say is that if you already have a deep mattress, invest in extra deep fitted sheets, as my standard depth sheets struggled to fit over both at once.

Pro’s

  • Cheaper to buy than whole new mattresses
  • Helps to even out the dip in your existing mattress
  • Easy to fit and very comfortable

The price of a good night's sleep

While some of the best things in life may be free, getting a new mattress certainly isn't.

The Hybrid Simba Mattress in a standard double size would normally set sleepers back £999, while the king size comes with a price tag of £1,149.

During the Black Friday sales, however, savvy sleepers can enjoy up to 60% off RRP reducing prices to a much more affordable £549.45 for the double and £631.95 for the king-size Hybrid mattress.

While slightly on the pricey side, similar brands such as Emma and Otty are around the same price point, and there are great discounts to be found across the range in the Simba Black Friday sale.

When it comes to the mattress topper there are also considerable discounts to be had. The standard double size is now reduced from £279 to £181.35, while the king size is £194.35 down from £299, around 35% off RRP.

Simba also offers a risk-free 200-night trial for buyers who want to give their products a really good road test before they buy. If you decide to return your Simba, the company will collect it for free (but don’t worry, they don’t ask you to get it back in the box).

Both items come with a 10-year guarantee and Simba promises carbon-neutral delivery and low-cost finance options to ensure that you really can sleep easier at night.

Simba Hybrid Mattress v Simba Hybrid Essential Topper

Deciding which one of these products will give you the best night's sleep is a bit like comparing apples with oranges. While the mattress is more expensive to buy, it is incredibly comfortable and has been innovatively designed using science to ensure an excellent night's sleep.

The topper is pretty much cut from the same cloth, but adds comfort where it is lacking, and can breathe new life into an old mattress. All in all, both products are user-friendly, offer superior comfort and can be purchased with big discounts in the Simba Black Friday sale.
