Signing the FDA-Required Mifepristone Agreement Form Did Not Meaningfully Raise Knowledge in Five-State Trial of 593 Patients

A form that U.S. patients must sign before receiving the abortion pill mifepristone did little to improve what they knew about the medication, according to a randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine on Oct. 19.

Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco's Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health program enrolled 593 patients at five clinics in California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas and Minnesota between January and October 2025. After standard clinic counseling, patients were randomly assigned to take a 12-question knowledge survey either before or after receiving and signing the FDA's Patient Agreement Form. In the main adjusted analysis, those who had signed the form answered an average of 10.44 questions correctly, compared with 10.26 among those who had not yet seen it. The difference was not statistically significant.
