Sighting of possible 'world-ending asteroid' over Russia has people perplexed

A sighting of a giant 'ball of fire' that some claimed could be a 'world-ending asteroid' has sparked debate online as no one's quite sure what it is.

The image was first shared in 2022 but fresh debate has been sparked after it was recirculated online, as it appears to show a bright orange orb with a trail of smoke behind it, hurtling towards the Earth at speed.

Sharing the sighting on Reddit, the original poster said they took the picture of the object in the sky above St Petersburg, Russia, and soon people began guessing what it could be.

Some thought it looked incredibly ominous, but others thought it was simply a unique cloud formation - as if it was moving fast, which an asteroid must do, it would have hit Earth already.

What do you think of the sighting? Let us know in the comments...

After the image was shared on Reddit, users began guessing what the sighting could be.

One said: "Foreshadowing of the coming world-ending asteroid."

Then another wrote: "Great balls of fire."

And a third simply added: "NOPE."

The image was also shared on UFO Sightings Footage, where a writer debated the sighting - believing it could be part of a Government cover-up, or a possible UFO sighting.

They wrote: "Is this a man-made effect on the cloud or is it a reaction to something happening on the ground or in the air? I get a distinct impression that we may never know.

"We're seeing absolute 'without any doubt whatsoever' the strangest events taking place one after the other. Things we didn't think could happen and things that have never happened before.

"I could start mentioning things on that bizarre list but each and everyone needs the necessary information with it so it makes some sense but it would take a while to mention the many different things going on.

"Okay, what about the UFOs recently shot down? Three UFOs are shot with missiles out of the sky and now nothing! It was front and centre news on every single news channel but now it's almost as if they've all been told that they are not allowed to say anything about it."
