Actress Sienna Miller has said signing prenups “defeats the purpose” of marriage.
The 44-year-old recently confirmed she was engaged to actor Oli Green.
She stars opposite Dominic West, 56, in upcoming legal drama War, about the explosive divorce between British tech entrepreneur Morgan Henderson (West) and international film star Carla Duva (Miller).
The eight-part Sky series, written by George Kay, opens with Miller providing evidence to her lawyers to prove that Morgan has broken their prenup, setting in motion a ruthless legal case.
Prenups in the UK are on the rise, making their way into more households especially among younger couples.
Speaking at the London premiere, Miller told the Press Association: “I feel like it kind of defeats the purpose of going into a marriage and making that commitment. But I also understand.”
According to research by UK investment and wealth management firm Handelsbanken Wealth & Asset Management, one in 10 couples opt for a prenup.
The series explores the ways prenups are not legally binding or automatically enforceable by courts in England and Wales.
West said: “I don’t think they are worth the paper they are written on. Waste of time.”
He went on to describe his love of legal dramas, notably the “twists and turns”.
“I love the courtroom and theatrics so I generally like that sort of thing,” he said.
“This was interesting because it’s that very thin line between love and war, and that’s where the drama teeters. It can go either way.”
Asked if marriage is the same, he joked: “Oh yeah, every day.”
Miller wore a feathered corset gown at the premiere and walked the blue carpet with West, who opted for a navy suit with a turquoise shirt.
The series, which premieres on Sky and Now on October 2 in the UK, has already received the greenlight for a second season where a new legal case with different claimants will be introduced.
