Steve Cotterill was distraught after his side conceded a 92nd-minute winner against Sunderland. Shrewsbury fought back after the Black Cats surrendered a two-goal advantage but, as has often been the case this season, Alex Neil’s side secured the points late on.
Nathan Broadhead struck at the death to snatch a dramatic victory and keep Sunderland’s promotion hopes alive. The win moves them three points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday - who make the daunting trip to MK Dons tonight.
Defeat for Shrewsbury leaves them in 17th, languishing in mid-table with no possibility of dropping down to League Two. Cotterill rued the missed opportunity to dent Sunderland’s playoff ambitions after battling valiantly to get back into the game.

After the match, the Shrews boss admitted to feeling ‘disappointed’ and thought the Stadium of Light crowd played their part.
“We did play well, especially in the second half when I thought we were really good and we were good after the first 20 minutes,” Cotterill told the club website. “They (Sunderland) had a couple of opportunities when it got back to 2-2 where they got in and ended up flashing a few balls across the box.
“I’m disappointed for the lads because they’ve given so much in that game and we’ve got a long journey home with no points. We’ve created enough to score at least another goal but another goal is difficult when you come away to clubs of this size because, all of a sudden, when it gets back to 2-2, 30,000 or so fans can drive them on and it’s always difficult for the opposition.
“The lads won’t quite know the magnitude of that performance. All they’ll see today is the result. What they won’t know is what they’ve used and how well they’ve done to come back from 2-0 down.
“There are a few lessons in there for them today but I can’t fault them today. I’m disappointed for the lads today. Not with them, for them.”
