Shocking footage emerges of brawl at university rugby match in Wales

A shocking video has emerged showing a huge brawl breaking out at the end of a Cardiff University rugby game.

The bust up was captured following the final whistle of a BUCS Super League game against Exeter University. It shows the two sets of players and bystanders getting involved.

It has been confirmed that Exeter Chiefs player and captain of Exeter University, Ollie Leatherbarrow, is being probed by the RFU for his role in the alleged incident.

The match, played at Cardiff University Sports Ground in Llanrumney, saw Cardiff win a pulsating contest 32-31 with the last kick of the game.

A video obtained by WalesOnline shows 16st 8lbs forward Leatherbarrow, wearing green and white, seemingly involved in a melee that ensued.

The game was played on February 8 and attracted a crowd estimated at 500. A few days later Leatherbarrow, who is studying economics at Exeter University and is also a Scotland Under-20 international, came on as a substitute for Exeter Chiefs in a Premiership Rugby Cup match with Sale.

The RFU confirmed that Leatherbarrow is the player under investigation. In a statement the governing body said: “The player has been charged with conduct prejudicial to the interests of the union and the game, contrary to RFU Rule 5.12 and will appear before a disciplinary panel.”

The hearing is scheduled for Thursday evening.

A spokesperson for Cardiff University said: “We are aware of an incident following the game versus Exeter and are awaiting the outcome of an on going RFU investigation. Until the outcome of this investigation is known it would be inappropriate to offer further comment.”

A spokesperson for the University of Exeter said: "We are aware that there is an ongoing investigation into an incident following a recent sports fixture. It would be inappropriate to comment further while that investigation continues."
