Shell Energy to give customers an extra £150 on top of Warm Home Discount

Shell Energy customers who are eligible for the Warm Home Discount will receive an extra £150 this winter.

It means households will get £300 from both payments from the energy giant to help pay their bills.

Customers will get the extra £150 from Shell Energy if you joined it on or before August 21, 2022, and you're eligible for the Warm Home Discount, which is also £150.

The top-up should be paid automatically in England and Wales if your supplier is part of the scheme.

You will be eligible for Warm Home Discount payment if you, or your partner, receive the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit.

You may also qualify if you get a different “qualifying benefit” and you have high energy costs.

The benefits that might mean you get the Warm Home Discount are:

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Income Support

  • Universal Credit

  • Housing benefit

  • Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits

  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit)

You will also need to have high energy use, as well as claiming these benefits, to be eligible for the Warm Home Discount scheme.

The deadline for submitting a claim for one of these benefits was August 21.

If you joined Shell on or after August 22, 2022, your previous supplier will pay your Warm Home Discount - but you won’t get the extra top-up from Shell.

The Warm Home Discount scheme is currently closed - but it will reopen again in November.

Some households in Scotland will need to apply for the Warm Home Discount discount. There is no Warm Home Discount payment in Northern Ireland.

The new support from Shell is part of its £50million help package to help vulnerable customers through the cost of living crisis.

Shell has also doubled the size of its hardship fund from £10million to £20million through to the end of 2024 as part of its new measures.

The announcement comes after the new Energy Price Guarantee came into effect on October 1, freezing energy bills at £2,500 for the average household for two years.

It replaces the Ofgem price cap, which would've seen bills rise to £3,549.

But the new Energy Price Guarantee is still above the old £1,971 price cap rate - and is more than £1,000 higher than what families were paying a year ago.
