Shane Warne: Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou pays tribute to cricket icon

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglu has paid tribute to legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne after his sudden death.

Warne died aged 53 in Thailand of a suspected heart attack with fans around the world left stunned by his sudden passing.

A statement from Shane's management read: "Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived.

"The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course."

Warnie, as he was affectionately known, gained a reputation for being one of the best bowlers in cricket as he played between 1992 and 2007 and took 708 test wickets.

He also took 293 One-Day International wickets and made more than 300 appearances for Australia across all formats.

Now celebrities and fans across the world have paid tribute to the blonde haired sporting hero with many remembering his frequent trips to Scotland's Dunhill Links tournament in St Andrews.

A spokesperson for Dunhill said: "He was a great cricketer, a stalwart of the @dunhilllinks and a great entertainer who was always a joy to be with. Everyone at Alfred Dunhill shares this loss deeply. Our sympathy is with Shane’s family."

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to his fellow countryman as "someone he always admired and respected for his extraordinary sporting achievements."

The Celtic manager, who had spoken with Shane Warne, who was also a Dafabet ambassador, during the recent Ashes series held in Australia, said: "This is absolutely devastating news to lose Shane, particularly at such a relatively young age, and my heart goes out to his whole family."

"We have lost a brilliant man, a phenomenal guy with such personality, energy and spirit and, of course, Australia has lost one of its true sporting icons.

"Indeed. I’m not sure Australia will ever find anyone quite like him again. For me, he was just one of the greatest and an absolute one of a kind.

"I had the pleasure of speaking to Shane a few weeks ago and it was a joy, a real moment for me as someone who respected him so much and it is something I will always treasure.

"Across Australia and, in fact, the whole sporting world, Shane’s loss will be deeply felt. Above all, though, the loss to Shane's family will be so difficult to bear and to them I extend my sincere and deepest sympathy.”

England cricketer Ian Botham also said of Shane: "I've lost a great friend on and off the playing field. “One of the best” my thoughts are with Jackson Summer & Brooke....RIP Warnster."

And former government spin doctor Alastair Campbell, who included Shane in his book Winners, admitted: "Finding it hard to compute Shane Warne has died.

"One of the best cricketers of all time, one of the best commentators of all time. The sort of guy you imagined would be a positive life force forever.

"One of the most interesting and most generous interviewees for Winners."

And Aussie born Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman said of the star's sudden death: "Like you all I am in shock to wake to the news that @ShaneWarne had passed away. I’m grateful to have known him, and to have witnessed his once in a generation talent.

"My heartfelt sympathies to his family and close friends at this incredibly difficult time. Rest well Shane."
