The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed unrestricted free agent big man Wenyen Gabriel to a non-guaranteed training camp deal according to new reporting from The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Per Charania, “Gabriel is finalizing a deal with the Boston Celtics” and “Gabriel, who averaged 5.5 PPG and 4.2 RPG for (the Los Angeles) Lakers last season, will compete for a reserve big man spot in Boston.”
The Athletic NBA insider also notes that the former Lakers center’s “strong play for South Sudan in the FIBA World Cup this summer helped secure the team’s first-ever spot in the 2024 Olympics.”
“Gabriel averaged 9.2 points and 6.8 rebounds for South Sudan and has worked out for the Celtics in Boston in recent weeks,” notes Charania.

With the Celtics having dealt away longtime big man Robert Williams III, Gabriel will be playing for a position of considerable need for Boston next season.
There, he will join potential two way big man Neemias Queta as potential options to help eat minutes for the Celtics during the regular season.
