I absolutely HATE when this happens.
Veteran first baseman Rowdy Tellez was all set to play in Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers and make a cool $200,000 bonus thanks to four more plate appearances to get to 425 for the year.
But now? Nope. He was released with the Pirates eliminated from the postseason.
Pirates GM Ben Cherington denied the bonus was the reason, but come on. That’s such a terrible move and one that the players in the clubhouse will take note of. Not great!
Here’s some reaction to the Pirates making this awful move that cost Tellez a lot of money:
Rowdy Tellez was four PAs shy of a performance bonus, per @EthanHullihen (who is ALWAYS right on these matters).
Ben Cherington was asked if that was factored in when Tellez was DFA’d and if he feels it would impact the optics of attracting potential free agents in the future. pic.twitter.com/kufI3QPz4r

Rowdy Tellez was due a 200k bonus at 425 plate appearances this year.
The Pirates just DFA’d him. He was at 421 plate appearances.
Did him dirty. pic.twitter.com/LqL53KBYOw

.@Pirates release 1B Rowdy Tellez 4 plate appearances short of a $200K contract bonus. And had the gall to claim it wasn't about $. What utter scumbags. Say what you want about @Cubs, but they'd never. do. that. pic.twitter.com/6NIflI5YhP
