And just like that, Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker is set to make her West End debut in 2024.
The four-time Golden Globe and two-time Emmy winner will trade the streets of Manhattan for London’s Strand as she takes to the Savoy Theatre for the West End transfer of the sell-out Broadway comedy show Plaza Suite.
The production, written by Neil Simon, will be running in London from January 15 to March 31, with tickets going on sale in September 2023.
Sarah Jessica Parker is perhaps best known for playing Carrie Bradshaw, and saying things like “I couldn’t help but wonder...” while strutting down Fifth in her Manolo Blahniks. But aside from her film and TV credits, which include box office smashes The First Wives Club, New Year’s Eve, and Hocus Pocus, the actress also has strong credentials in theatre, starring in The Innocents in 1976, before taking on the lead role in Annie in 1977.
She appeared less in Broadway productions following her small and big screen successes, and Plaza Suite marked Parker’s first Broadway appearance in 25 years last year. Now, and the show is set to continue. Parker leads the cast, starring alongside her husband, two-time Tony Award winner Broderick, following his acclaimed West End run in The Starry Messenger in 2019.
In the production, the two actors play three different couples in one famous hotel suite, with Matthew Broderick taking on the roles of Sam Nash, Jesse Kiplinger and Roy Hubley. Sarah Jessica Parker takes on the roles of Karen Nash, Muriel Tafe and Norma Hubley.
“Karen and Sam are a long-married pair whose relationship may be headed for an early checkout. Muriel and Jesse are former high school sweethearts who seem destined for an extended stay. And Norma and Roy are the mother and father of the bride, ready to celebrate their daughter’s nuptials – if only they can get her out of the bathroom,” reads an official synoposis.
Plaza Suite was a huge hit in New York, with the production becoming a must-see for Broadway audiences, playing to sold-out houses and shattering multiple box office records at the Hudson Theatre. It became the third-highest grossing play revival in Broadway history during its limited 19-week run.
The creative team includes a swathe of Tony Award winners, including John Lea Beatty on set design, Jane Greenwood on costume design, Brian MacDevitt on lighting design, Scott Lehrer on sound design, and Marc Shaiman on incidental music.
