Traffic is facing serious delays on the South Circular road in Catford on Saturday afternoon after a lorry collided with the station bridge.
The B&M articulated lorry was seen lifted onto its side wheels after the impact which happened after it proved too high for the 4.8m railway bridge.
London Fire Brigade responded to the incident alongside the Metropolitan Police.
The A205 is one of the busiest roads in south London and Transport for London said at 3.30pm that serious delays were reported.
A Met Police spokesman added: “Police were called at 2.16pm after a lorry became stuck under Catford Bridge.
“Road closures are in place while London Fire Brigade works to remove the lorry.
“There have not been reports of any injuries.”
The Transport for London ‘jam cam’ showed that cars were moving very slowly through the area. The site said both directions are blocked at the Catford Road junction after the collision.
The B&M lorry is shown under the railway bridge connecting to Catford and Catford Bridge stations. It is next to the prestigious St Dunstan's College.
Lou Thomas spotted the incident on Twitter/X and wrote: “That’s the south circular – one of the busiest roads in south London…”
Slim added on the social networking site: “Avoid Catford bridge. A B&M truck slightly tipped and got stuck. Being told it will be so for the next three or four hours.”
Lorry strikes are not uncommon on the South Circular, with the road being closed twice in recent years following the incidents.
In one such impact, a Lidl lorry completely overturned.
London Fire Brigade has been approached by the Evening Standard for further comment.
