What Happens Inside a Dog After Seven
A dog's glomerular filtration rate, the speed at which the kidneys clear waste from the blood, begins measurable decline around age seven in medium and large breeds, and around nine in smaller ones. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found that subclinical kidney dysfunction is present in roughly 40 percent of dogs over eight years old before any outward symptoms appear. The dog isn't limping yet. The bloodwork is already shifting.
