Senators Praise Secret Service Director Amid Criticism

Senator Thom Tillis, co-chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group speaks, during a press conference, in Budapest, Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. Two U.S. senators will submit a bipartisan resolution to Congress

Following a hearing regarding the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, senators offered bipartisan praise for Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe's performance. GOP Sen. Thom Tillis commended Rowe for his transparency, acknowledging catastrophic mistakes while also emphasizing the need for accountability within the Secret Service.

California Democratic Sen. Laphonza Butler also lauded Rowe for his authoritative approach and willingness to take responsibility for the incident. However, Senate Homeland Security Committee Chair Sen. Gary Peters highlighted the ongoing nature of the investigation, indicating that more information is needed.

While some senators refrained from calling for Rowe's resignation, others, such as GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, insisted that accountability measures must be taken, with Graham stating that 'somebody's got to be fired' for meaningful change to occur. Sen. Ted Cruz acknowledged Rowe's improved transparency but noted a lack of specificity in some of his responses.

The mixed feedback from senators underscores the complexity of the situation and the varying perspectives on how best to address the security lapses that led to the assassination attempt. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what further actions will be taken within the Secret Service to prevent similar incidents in the future.
