Senator Warner: President's strikes on Iran appropriate, more to come

attack on iran

In a recent interview, Senator Mark Warner, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed his support for President Trump's decision to strike back against Iran. He praised the precision of the operation, which targeted seven locations and hit over 85 targets. Senator Warner believes that this is just the beginning of an extended campaign to not only target Shia militant groups but also their Iranian sponsors in the region.

The senator recalled a meeting with President Trump after the takedown of a U.S. drone, where the president had contemplated striking Iran but ultimately chose to exercise restraint to avoid the implications of a wider war. Senator Warner commended the president for taking six months to carefully plan and execute the strike on General Soleimani, the leader of the Iranian Quds Force in Baghdad.

Regarding the criticism that it took too long for the U.S. to respond to the attacks, Senator Warner suggested that weather concerns and the need to strategize may have delayed the operation. He also acknowledged that while Iran provides funding to these militant groups, some of them may act independently, such as the Houthis. The senator believes that the Houthis need to be targeted more aggressively, both for their role in disrupting maritime traffic and their attacks on U.S. soldiers.

When asked about the effectiveness of economic sanctions against Iran, Senator Warner acknowledged the challenges in cutting off all Iranian funds that support these groups. He emphasized the need to look into alternative methods of funding, such as cryptocurrency, and to reassess the approach to dealing with these groups.

Senator Warner emphasized that the U.S. does not seek conflict in the Middle East or a wider war with Iran. He expressed the hope that the strikes against Iranian forces in the region and the Houthis would deter further aggression. Additionally, he stressed the importance of considering the post-strike aftermath and finding a solution for Gaza that includes targeting Hamas leadership while providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.

In conclusion, Senator Warner supports President Trump's decision to strike back against Iran and believes that further action is necessary to deter Iranian-backed militant groups. He urges caution in navigating the complex and volatile situation in the Middle East and stresses the need for a comprehensive approach that includes the involvement of moderate Sunni nations, Israel, and the United States to counter the extremism emanating from Iran.
