Senate Votes On Stopgap Spending Bill Amid Government Shutdown Threat

U.S. Capitol building as the partial government shutdown looms in Washington, U.S.

The Senate has recently taken up the stopgap spending bill that was previously passed by the House of Representatives. The Senate is currently in the process of holding a vote on the proposal, as they missed the midnight deadline to prevent a government shutdown. If approved, the spending bill would provide funding for the federal government through March.

Within the spending bill are provisions for disaster relief and farming, aimed at addressing critical needs in these areas. However, notably absent from the bill is a provision to suspend the debt limit, a matter that President-elect Donald Trump has been urging Republicans to address.

This current spending bill, often referred to as 'Plan C,' comes after previous attempts to reach a bipartisan agreement were unsuccessful. Earlier in the week, an initial bipartisan proposal was thwarted by Trump and his allies. Subsequently, a plan backed by Trump failed to pass in the House on Thursday.
