Move over Kylie Jenner, there’s a new queen of Instagram in town. As of yesterday, Selena Gomez has officially reclaimed her crown and surpassed the youngest Kar-Jenner to become the most followed woman on Instagram once again.
It’s not the first time Gomez has held the top spot — she’s been an on and off Insta favourite for years, previously eclipsed by singer Ariana Grande in 2019 during the peak of her Thank U Next fame, but Grande was then overtaken by Jenner, who became the first woman on Instagram to hit 300 million followers.
Gomez’s gargantuan following is back with a vengance, though, as she slowly gained on Jenner throughout the day yesterday to the point where she overtook her. At this point, Gomez’s following clocks in at 381m, while Jenner’s sits close behind at 380m.
It makes sense, given Selena’s increased fame in recent months — she’s been praised for her performance in Hulu series Only Murders In The Building, released a critically acclaimed documentary on her mental health struggles and has been rubbing shoulders with equally famous faces, like the Peltz-Beckhams (to the point people thought they were a throuple).
Meanwhile, Jenner has been laying slightly lower than usual. She’s split with baby daddy Travis Scott and is busy raising two kids under the age of six, which would explain why Instagram may understandably have taken a back seat in recent months. That doesn’t mean she’s stayed out of the headlines, though, with a recent Valentine’s Day post where she was pictured kissing best friend Anastasia Karanikolaou causing quite a stir.
So is Jenner bothered? Well, she’s already had to respond to claims that she’s beefing Gomez, and it’s only been 24 hours. It started after Selena posted a recent eyebrow tutorial, with followers then noticing that Kylie tried her hand at a similar trend, which they identified as “mocking”. Jenner then commented on one of the TikToks observing this “beef” and put things to bed.

“This is reaching,” she wrote, “no shade towards Selena ever and I didn’t see her eyebrow posts! You guys are making something out of nothing, this is silly.” Gomez herself then weighed in, saying: “Agreed @kyliejenner it’s all unnecessary. I’m a fan of Kylie!”
If the women say they aren’t beefing, then they aren’t beefing. Plus with the pair’s follower counts in such close competition, it might not be too long until Jenner is on top again. Watch this space.
