The Secret Service is prepared to provide protection for the expected running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday. The Democratic nominee for vice president is anticipated to receive a full Secret Service protective detail, according to a spokesperson for the USSS.
The resources and manpower for this protection are allocated through the Office of Protective Operations and the Candidate Nominee Operations Section (CNOS). These specialized teams are established during each election cycle and are specifically trained and equipped to handle the demanding travel and event schedule of political campaigns.
The Secret Service has special agents and resources stationed at field offices near the residences of the final contenders. The permanent CNOS team will be activated once the official announcement of the nominee is made.
This new protectee will be under Secret Service protection during a time when the agency is facing increased scrutiny. This comes shortly after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and the recent resignation of the agency's director, Kimberly Cheatle, amidst the fallout.
