The search for a man missing in waters off the coast of K'gari (Fraser Island) has ended, three days after his boat sank.
The man in his 60s and a 25-year-old woman radioed a distress call on Sunday night, when their 30ft yacht started taking on water, 9 kilometres north of the island.
A wide-ranging air and sea search was launched, using rescue aircraft, water police, and Hervey Bay Volunteer Marine officers to scour waters near Breaksea Spit.
Authorities rescued the 25-year-old woman, who was visiting from overseas, after she was found floating in the ocean on Monday morning.
She was discharged from Bundaberg Hospital on Tuesday evening.
Queensland Police sent crews out to commence the search for the missing skipper at first light this morning, but decided to suspend the operation after an extensive search.
"Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to locate the man and bring him home to his loved ones," Wide Bay district regional search coordinator Constable Rowan Treiguts said.
"We have liaised closely with his family and discussed the sad news regarding the likelihood of survival; they have asked for privacy during this difficult time."
