The Seattle Seahawks have an opportunity to make history this season by doing something they’ve never done before: defend home turf in the regular season against the Washington Commanders.
For over twenty years now, Washington DC’s NFL franchise has been a dysfunctional and toxic disaster. But there is one area they have found success in, and it’s when they travel to the Pacific Northwest.
Since Lumen Field opened its doors in 2002, the Washington franchise is 4-0 against the Seahawks in Seattle.
Ouch.
In fairness, the Seahawks did notch a pair of home playoff victories against the other Washington in the 2005 and 2007 postseasons. But this still only brings the tally to 2-4 all time at Lumen Field.
The last time Washington visited the Emerald City was during the 2017 season. The Seahawks were upset 17-14 in a sloppy affair. The offense was shutout for the first three quarters, Russell Wilson threw two interceptions (technically three, but picks thrown during 2-point conversion attempts don’t officially count) and kicker Blair Walsh missed three field goals.
But now Seattle has a chance to leave this all behind during their week 10 bout with the Commanders. In fact, Week 10 will mark the first trip to Lumen Field with the new(er) Commanders moniker. Perhaps this will signal a new chapter in the rivalry.
