Seagull spotted picking at dead rat's body as streets 'overrun' with vermin

Streets in Liverpool are being "overrun" with rats as residents say "more needs to be done".

Residents in Wavertree have complained over recent weeks as rats have been spotted running on streets, and even into houses, leaving families worried to let their children play outside. Taking to social media, many have said rats have "become residents".

One Facebook user shared a shocking video on his local Facebook group of a seagull picking at a dead rat on Thornycroft Road at around 7pm on Tuesday evening. The seagull can be seen picking up the rats body ad dragging it on the street.

Sharing the video with the ECHO, he said he has lived in the area for around 10 years, but has never seen the situation "so bad". He added: "This is a massive problem in this area, we need more done.

"Our children play out on these disgusting streets. I have lived here 10 years and never known it to be so bad. The rats, the seagulls, at one time didn’t even used to be seagulls like now.

"More needs doing, this can’t go on. We can’t keep reporting this, it's is a big problem and something drastic needs to happen as soon as possible."

Over recent weeks, more people have been taking to social media to share their experiences of rat infestations on their streets, including seeing dead rats laying on the pavements as people pass by. One user described the situation as "disgusting" as others urged residents to continue reporting the action.

Earlier this month, the ECHO reported that resident Michelle Samson Austin, 53, also called for action to be taken regarding overflowing bins on pavements. Another resident said they had been trying home remedies to keep the rats away, adding: "We've had a couple of dead rats in our own garden and bins.

"I'm sick of them now, they're everywhere. Those bins never seem to be fully emptied. I've tried traps and peppermint spray and googling what else I can do to keep them away but still keep finding them."

Liverpool City Council's website states residents can request a pest control visit if you have problems with rats, insider or outside of your property, mice inside your property, wasps inside your property or ants inside your property. It reads: "We aim to deal with your request within five working days, or 24 hours for rats inside a property - excluding the loft."
