Scrubs fans rejoice over JD and Turk’s reunion — but question Elliot’s new plot line

Scrubs fans are celebrating the return of the beloved medical sitcom, complete with original characters.

Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke are reprising their characters — JD, Turk, and Elliot, respectively — on the hit show, which debuted in 2001 on NBC before moving to ABC from 2008 to 2010.

*Spoilers for the Scrubs reboot follow!*

The reboot’s official summary reads: “JD (Braff) & Turk (Faison) scrub in together for the first time in a long time - medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.”

Fans were eager to tune in Wednesday night to watch the trio in action — especially the dynamic between on-again, off-again lovers JD and Elliot. But they were dismayed to learn that, in the years since the original series ended, the couple got married and divorced.

“Noooo, their marriage didn’t make it?” one fan questioned on X, while another said, “LOVE IS DEAD.”

“Noooo not JD and Elliott being divorced!,” another wrote while a fourth wrote, “I don’t know how I feel about the JD and Elliot story line #Scrubs.”

“Don’t love what they’ve done to JD and Elliot though,” someone else chimed in as another agreed, “I can’t believe they did that. I preferred the way the originally ended it.”

Still, others were overjoyed to see Braff’s JD and Faison’s Turk back on their screens.

“The classic JD and Turk 7th sense- whenever the other is near!! I have was missed these codependent besties!! And we even got an Eeeeaaggggllleeee!! Welcome back #Scrubs, welcome back,” one fan wrote on X.

“JD and Turk still have a strong bond!!” another wrote while a third said, “JD & Turk are still having a strongest bond.”

The first two episodes clearly resonated with viewers, even those who were skeptical about the reboot.

“It’s perfect. This show needs to last longer than Grey’s anatomy,” someone else wrote while another agreed, “Scrubs hadn't missed a beat. Hilarious still. Was super worried, but its been amazing so far.”

“The new season/reboot of #Scrubs is everything! This is so nostalgic and nobody has missed a beat! So glad they kept it the same,” another chimed in as someone else wrote, “The #scrubs reboot is exactly what we needed ... just cried watching the end of the first episode. We are so back. It feels like the original picking back up where we’d expect them to be! Thank you to the writers for doing this amazing show justice.”

In August 2024, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence exclusively told The Independent that a reboot was in the works as the show’s creative team felt they had “stories to tell.” Lawrence also addressed the challenges of reuniting the original cast, saying, “the hardest part is that Zach and Donald have aged.”

“People still have that affinity, and love, for that goofy youthfulness. But if I saw two guys in their late 40s/50s doing ‘World’s Most Giant Doctor,’ and carrying each other around all the time, I would go, ‘What the f*** is going on,’ you know?”

He said the objective of the show is to “see what that [friendship] looks like at their age, and [take] a comedic look at what medicine has become since those kids started out as interns.”

In addition to Braff, Faison, and Chalke, returning cast members include Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley.

New episodes of Scrubs will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with streaming available the next day on Hulu.
