Scottish whisky chosen by Doddie Weir sells out in 20 minutes in MND fundraiser

A whisky that was selected specifically by the late Doddie Weir sold out within 20 minutes of going up for sale on Wednesday, with all profits going to charity.

Distributed by Royal Mile Whiskies, all available bottles of the Highland Single Malt AD/06:17 were purchased almost immediately. Only four bottles — number one, two, five and 55 — remain, and will be reserved for future auctions to raise money for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds research to find effective treatments for motor neurone disease (MND).

AD/06:17, which was distilled and bottled by Ardnamurchan Distillery, has been in development since June 2017. It was chosen from a single ex-Oloroso Sherry cask for the Scottish rugby legend, who passed away shortly after his visit to Glenbeg on November 26, 2022 to select the final cask, after six years of living with MND.

Director of Fundraising at My Name’5 Doddie Foundation Paul Thompson commented: "The success of this release shows the strength of Doddie’s legacy. It’s what drives the Foundation on our continued mission to find a cure for MND.

"There is huge momentum in MND research at the moment, supported by the launch of our five-year research strategy this week."

The foundation's five-year strategy, named Catalysing a Cure, outlines how it will invest millions of pounds in innovative research, which is expected to have the greatest impact in pursuit of treatments and a cure for the devastating disease that affects around 5,000 people in the UK at any one time.

Thompson added: "We’re extremely grateful to everyone who made this launch possible; Ardnamurchan Distillery, Royal Mile Whiskies and most importantly, everyone who purchased a bottle. They will deservedly enjoy a dram in Doddie’s honour.”

The five-year-old single malt, priced at £100 per 750ml bottle, is described as ‘mouth coating’, with hazelnut praline, sea salt and bonfire embers, and a finish of ‘lingering milk chocolate’.

One customer who bought a bottle stated: "Today I managed to purchase the Doddie Weir Ardnamurchan whisky, which means a lot as my sister has the condition and has received a lot of support from the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Thanks for making this bottle available and giving everyone a fair chance to purchase."
