Scots theatre cancels visit from acclaimed Russian ballet company due to Ukraine invasion

A Scots theatre has cancelled a visit from an acclaimed Russian ballet company as they "stand firmly" behind the people of Ukraine.

Edinburgh Playhouse released a statement on Saturday evening confirming the cancellation due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine as Vladimir Putin continues to make an aggressive advance.

The Russian State Ballet Company of Siberia were booked for numerous dates in March and were due to perform Romeo & Juliet, as well as swan lake.

The decision has now been made to cancel both shows.

Sharing the news on social media, The Ambassador Theatre Group said they hoped for a "swift" return to peace in the region.

A statement on the Edinburgh Playhouse Facebook page said: "The Ambassador Theatre Group stands firmly behind the people and nation of Ukraine at this time.

"Consequently, the decision has been taken to cancel the forthcoming visit of the Russian State Ballet Company of Siberia to our venues, Edinburgh Playhouse and Bristol Hippodrome, which were scheduled to take place between 3-5 March and 25-26 March respectively.

"We hope for a swift return to peace and stability in the region.

"We will be in touch with customers who had tickets for these performances as soon as possible, and thank them for their patience and understanding."
