Scots smash hit musical star 'pretty happy' about indyref2 date announcement

Scots smash hit musical star 'pretty happy' about indyref2 date announcement

THE Scottish rising star currently playing Alexander Hamilton in the smash-hit musical has welcomed a date being set for indyref2.

Reuben Joseph is taking on the lead role in Hamilton at Victoria Palace Theatre in London’s West End and shared a news post on his Instagram story about a second referendum.

Joseph, who took on small screen roles in the BBC drama Vigil and the Britbox Irvine Welsh adaptation Crime, is the first Scottish person to fill the role.

Hamilton was a runaway hit on its debut in 2015, and has been hailed by critics for telling the story of the Founding Fathers of the US through music and rap with a cast of predominantly non-white people.

SNP communications officer Fraser MacDonald shared a screengrab of Joseph’s post on Twitter with the caption: “The first Scottish Alexander Hamilton also seems pretty happy to share that Scotland will have a referendum next year”.

And Kirsten Innes, the author of the critically acclaimed novel Scabby Queen, said Joseph, educated at Glasgow Clyde College, was “scorching all the earth around him” with his leading turn in the musical.

Joseph comes to Hamilton fresh from a turn in the music Orphans which toured Scotland earlier this year, starring Burniston creator Robert Florence and Limmy's show actor Paul McCole.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced Scotland would vote again on independence on October 19, 2023 if granted permission by Westminster.

If permission is denied, the SNP have announced they will fight the next general election, expected in 2024, on the sole issue of independence.

Hamilton was born the illegitimate son of Alexander Hamilton, the son of the laird of Grange in Ayrshire in the West Indies.
