Scots dad jailed in Iraq over 'Qatar Bank debt' has flight home delayed

A Scots man locked up in Iraq for the past two months will have to wait for his homecoming after his flight home was delayed.

Brian Glendinning, 43, from Kincardine in Fife, was jailed in Baghdad in September after touching down at Basrah airport in September to start a new job. However, the dad-of-three was detained on an Interpol Red Notice from Qatar over a debt he allegedly owed to the Qatar National Bank.

Brian is believed to have took a £20,000 loan while working in Doha in 2016, and was unable to keep up to date with the repayments when he lost his job in Scotland, but a mystery donor stepped in to wipe the debt.

He was due to arrive back in Edinburgh today but his flight has been delayed by the weather conditions and it is expected his flight will now land tomorrow.

Brain is believed to have been taken for questioning for an hour as he cleared immigration in Iraq

Radha Stirling from Detained in Dubai said: "I spoke with Brian last night just before he went to the airport.

"He was excited to be coming and keen to discuss his shocking experience.

"You can imagine what he must have gone through at that moment.

"His family are frustrated and disappointed that he won't be arriving today and Brian will be exhausted on his return.

"The flights are problematic for the family in that most of them layover in Qatar or the UAE and Brian does not want to go to a Gulf country in case he is re-arrested.

"We will update the media and the public as to the details of his arrival as we know.

"It is expected to be tomorrow morning.

"His family, friends and potentially, his MP, Douglas Chapman will be there to meet him".
