ScotRail warn of more 'significant disruption' today after knock-on delays from rail strike

ScotRail have warned of more ‘significant disruption’ on Scotland’s rail network today following the second day of strike action.

The rail firm told commuters to expect more disruption due to the reopening Network Rail signal boxes at different times throughout Friday.

It comes after a number of Network Rail staff took to picket lines across Scotland on Thursday as part of three days of UK -wide strike action amid a dispute over pay and conditions.

Signallers and maintenance staff were among the Network Rail workers who walked out as part of the industrial action.

ScotRail was only able to operate five services across Scotland’s central belt until 6.30pm yesterday as a result of the strikes.

Services will resume ‘later than normal’ today, ScotRail has warned.

A spokesperson for the firm said yesterday: “There will be significant disruption across the country tomorrow [Friday], due to the reopening of Network Rail signal boxes at different times throughout the day, following today’s strike action by Network Rail RMT members.

“Services will start later than normal due to this.”

They later added: “We’re urging anyone travelling to check their journey in advance.”

ScotRail services are expected to be heavily disrupted over the weekend, as RMT members plan another day of strikes on Saturday.

The trade union said that over 40,000 members took to pickets across the UK to protest over working conditions, potential redundancies and pay.

Speaking after Thursday’s strikes, RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “Our members are leading the way in standing up for all working people trying to get a pay rise and some job security.

"In a modern economy workers need to be properly rewarded for their work, enjoy good conditions and have the peace of mind that their job will not be taken away from them.

"Grant Shapps needs to get in the room or get out of the way so we can negotiate with these companies who we have successfully struck dozens of deals with previously.

"What we cannot accept is thousands of railway workers being thrown on the scrapheap after being praised as heroes during Covid.

"RMT will continue its industrial campaign until a negotiated settlement is reached."
