ScotRail suspends a dozen routes as flooding chaos continues

ScotRail bosses have put the brakes on a dozen routes across the country as they contend with heavy rainfall and flooding.

The train operator has issued a list of services that it says cannot run because of the inclement weather conditions that have plagued Scotland in recent days. It has arranged a number of replacement bus services that passengers can travel on instead, with connections to local buses and Edinburgh Trams for those heading for the capital on Hogmanay.

Heavy rainfall in recent days has caused widespread disruption on Scotland's roads and rails. Network Rail staff – fresh from a series of strikes and ahead of further action – have been working to drain the railways, clear debris and repair landslips.

Passengers hoping to travel on Scotrail services in the run up to the bells are being advised to check their journeys before setting off.

The firm said on Saturday: "Due to flooding and various speed restrictions implemented at different locations across the network, we are unable to operate the following routes at this time. Please continue to check our app and website before travelling, our services are at risk of delays, alterations and cancellations."

Network Rail has shared images of some of the damage caused on the railways by heavy rain, which prompted the Met Office to issue an amber weather warning for large parts of Scotland. Some parts of the network are so flooded that divers are required to inspect the rails for damage.

Vincent Fitzsimons, flood duty manager at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), said late on Friday: "The transport network has been affected and those travelling for essential journeys are urged to plan ahead. Anyone out walking should also be extra cautious, even around small watercourses."
