Scotland’s best and worst areas for school grade performance ranked in new list

Scotland's best and worst areas for academic performance have been revealed in new research.

East Renfrewshire is the best performing area in the country followed by East Dunbartonshire and the Western Isles.

On the other hand, Clackmannanshire, Aberdeenshire and Angus were named as Scotland's worst performing areas academically.

An analysis performed by Oxford Summer School looked at exam results data from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) for every local authority in Scotland.

The report ranked areas by students' results at National 5 and Scottish Higher level.

"This data offers a compelling insight into which areas of Scotland are dominating academically, especially when it comes to the most important exams a student will take in their lifetime – the National 5s and Scottish Highers," said an Oxford Summer School spokesperson.

The report ranked academic performance by the National 5s and Scottish Highers results (PA)

They added: "While some areas of Scotland are thriving educationally, other parts are falling below the Scottish average.

"In the past two years we have seen immense disruption to education due to Covid-19, and it is vital that the UK does everything possible to ensure every child has access to quality education."
