All the pressure was on Stephen Kenny going into Ireland's Nations League clash with Scotland, but it was his Scottish equivalent that was feeling the heat on Saturday night.
Scotland slumped to a 3-0 loss at the Aviva Stadium, with some of the Tartan Army in attendance booing their side at the full-time whistle.
And the criticism didn't stop there as many furious Scotland fans took to social media to voice their concerns with the performance.
One said: "Steve Clarke got lucky with the Euro/nations league back door. He’s stubborn to the point of detriment & needs to go. Waste of progress with a great pool of players."
Another commented: "Steve Clarke has only one tactic- the same tactics that he employed at Kilmarnock- try and defend deep and lump the ball up front worked perfectly on a plastic surface- on grass with no midfield players or tactics is there for all to see - Kilmarnock is Steve Clarke level."
Someone else tweeted: "Steve Clarke is what he is. Bang average and done a job.. but my god, he is the master of sucking the life out of talented players and a nation.. I swear I'd do a better job."
But some supporters felt the criticism aimed at Clarke was over the top.
One posted: "Crazy how fast people turn on @ScotlandNT and Steve Clarke . Being Scottish, what gives you the right to be that entitled. Also notice it’s the people that only watch the big games and on the couch at that."
Another said: "I can understand the anger from all of my fellow scotland supporters,it was embarrassing but some of the comments against Steve Clarke have been an absolute disgrace. If you have something to say about the tactics or the way we played fine, but personal abuse is not on. Get a grip."
Meanwhile, Andy Robertson admitted Scotland deserved to be booed off by the Tartan Army following Saturday's game.
The Liverpool defender conceded the performance was “nowhere good enough” and said the Scotland fans were right to vent their frustration.
He told Premier Sports: “To the fans behind the goal booing us off, completely correct.
“We know they travel a long way, we know they pay a lot of money and that performance is nowhere near good enough in a Scotland jersey.
“We will need to assess as a team, we will need to assess individually and we have to hit the reset button because everything was good last year, but this year the performances haven’t quite been up to scratch as of yet.
“We knew they were under pressure, two defeats in the first two and they were probably getting questioned.
“We had to weather the storm, but we didn’t do it.
“We gave them easy corners, win big tackles which got the crowd up and that set the tone for the game and unfortunately we didn’t get into the game until we were 3-0 down.
“The overall performance was nowhere good enough and not good enough for a Scotland jersey.”
Robertson believes Scotland need to get back to the level of consistency shown in the eight unbeaten games before their World Cup play-off semi-final defeat to Ukraine.
He said: “It can’t keep being one performance and trying to pick them up or trying to rally them.
“We need to get back to being consistent, which we were really good at last year.
“Today, I don’t think anyone played above par which, when you come to places like this, is nowhere good enough.
“Some words were said in the dressing room and rightly so, but the manager, coaches and all the players, we are all together, but some things have to be said and we have to reset and go on a good run.
“It can’t be one good performance then one bad performance, that’s not what we have built under this manager and that’s what we need to get back to, doing the basics correctly.”
