Scotland drenched by heavy rain as torrential showers could give way to hot spell

The deluge of rain seen this weekend in Scotland won't be letting up early this week as more downpours make their way across the country.

Showers are moving eastward through Monday as Scots in the north and west were doused by heavy rainfall in the morning. The showers will be accompanied by a brisk wind, marking a wet and chilly start to July.

Ventusky maps says the Shetland Islands face up to 4mm of rain over three hours from 4pm today, reports the Mirror. Whilst Tuesday will begin drier, BBC Weather Scotland reports more showers will "linger" over the central belt for much of tomorrow.

The blustery showers follow a wet weekend which saw Achnagart receive the most rain on Sunday when a whopping 27.4mm fell on the Highlands village.

The rain will dry out through Monday evening only to return. After a dry start on Tuesday, BBC Weather Scotland meteorologist Joy Dunlop says another band of rain will hover over the central belt for much of the day. The showers will begin fading away in the late afternoon when sunshine will break way.

All is not doom and gloom this week. Although Scots will see highs of 13 to 16C at the start of the week, the Met Office says the weather will make a turn on Thursday as the mercury could hit 28C in the UK by Friday.

The Met Office tweeted: "There are signs of something warmer by the end of the week, especially in the southeast."

Forecasters have noted that the next heatwave could arrive in the middle of the month with temperatures reaching as high as the upper 30Cs.

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell told the Mirror: "It is early at this stage, but if you are betting then that's the best place for the warmest weather. It will be more settled then but the first week of July will be changeable."

Although the first half of July won't see summery weather, Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge also told the publication temperatures could hit the mid to high 30Cs again.
