Scotland bowler Mary Stevenson dies two months after winning Commonwealth Games gold

  • Team Scotland bowler Mary Stevenson has died just two months after winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
  • Stevenson won the Para Mixed Pairs B2-B3 alongside Robert Barr, Sarah Jane Ewing and Jim Aitken on home soil in Glasgow.
  • She became the oldest female gold medallist in Scotland’s history, claiming victory weeks before her 74th birthday.
  • Bowls Scotland released a statement on Facebook that read: “Only last weekend, she was back competing for Scotland and in great form. It is difficult to believe she is no longer with us.”
  • Stevenson only started playing bowls in 2013 at the age of 61, and went on to achieve major success after being introduced to the Blind Bowlers when her eyesight deteriorated.
