Scone's RDMI to celebrate Queen's Jubilee with pipe band and 1950s memorabilia display

A Platinum Jubilee celebration day for Scone village is taking place at the RDM Institute on Saturday, June 4 from noon to 4pm.

Ahead of the big day, organisers Scone Village Association and Scone and District Community Council have asked for people from the area - and anywhere else in Perthshire - to be kind enough to share their memories from 1953 with the project.

In the halls on June 4 there will be a memorabilia room, displaying memories of the coronation and subsequent jubilees, photographs and newspapers cuttings.

Some items from the 1950s, including two wedding dresses, will be on show.

There will be a craft room where children can design and make a crown (free of charge) to enter in the parade of the crowns in the park.

The park will have music from Perthshire Brass and Perth and District Pipe band, Highland, country and contemporary dancing and lots of activities.

There will be stalls in the park with representatives from the Boys’ Brigade, Guides, Brownies, church, RDM School, nursery, Scone Thistle, Scone Tennis Club, Belle Plates, Culture Perth and Kinross and many more of the groups in the village are attending.

Conscious of the financial situation, organisers have asked that no activities at the stalls should cost more than 50p - indeed many of the activities will be free, any monies made by the stall holders will be kept by their respective groups, thus aiding them all.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a packed lunch in a picnic in the park style.

Some vintage vehicles are expected to come along for the event.

All involved believe it is shaping up to be a great day and one everyone hopes Scone residents will remember for years to come.

“We are still looking for stories from residents of their memories of the coronation, whether they were in Scone or elsewhere,” explained Karen Donaldson, secretary on RDM Institute Management Committee.
