A high school and eight Cardiff schools have had to shut at short notice because large parts of the city have been left with no water. Welsh Water says teams are dealing with the burst water main in the Llanedeyrn area of the Cardiff.
Cardiff Council announced mid morning on Monday (November 14) that St Teilo’s Church in Wales School will be closing, "due to the ongoing impact of a burst water main affecting the east of the city". A spokesman added: "It had been hoped that the school could remain open with the assistance of tankers provided by Welsh Water."
Two properties in Roundwood, Llanedeyrn, were also in danger of being flooded after the burst main was reported early on Monday. A spokesman for Cardiff Council said: "The council’s Highways Emergency Engineer received a call around 5.30am advising that two properties in Roundwood were in danger of flooding. We immediately sent out an officer with sandbags to help protect the properties."
Welsh Water say that some properties in the CF3 and CF23 postcode and surrounding areas are either experiencing "low water pressure or no water". A statement added: "Our teams are on site and investigating."
The Llanedeyrn Primary School website has issued a statement saying that the school will be closed today because of the situation. It said: "Unfortunately, we have just found out from Welsh Water that they have switched off the water for Llanedeyrn and it will not be switched back on until later this afternoon. That leaves us with no choice but to close the school today, Monday 14th November 2022."
Local councillor Keith Jones said that Glan Yr Afon and Bryn Hafod primary schools were also having to close because there is no water to the sites. He said they were closed because of a lack of working toilets, heating, hygiene and catering facilities.
Cardiff council later confirmed that St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School, Bryn Celyn Primary, Hollies, Pen Y Groes, and Berllan Deg are also all closed.

Eastern High in Rumney has issued a notice to pupils today to say that they are open and the school is not affected by the burst water main. A letter that has gone out to local residents says that until the pipe is fixed, "You may experience low pressure or no water. We expect all supplies to be fully restored by later this morning.
"As a general rule, it should take about five second to fill a pint glass from the cold water tap in your kitchen. If you can run your cold kitchen tap, this will also help to clear any discolouration in your supply."
