Schoolgirl, 15, who died after being pulled from Tameside river is named as school pays tribute

A schoolgirl who died after being pulled from a river in Tameside has been named. Abbie Walton, 15, was pronounced dead despite the best efforts of paramedics last night (June 14).

Emergency services were called out to the River Etherow near Hodge Lane, in Broadbottom, shortly before 8pm following reports of a person in difficulty in the water. The tragedy followed the annual Broadbottom duck race, which had taken place earlier on Wednesday evening.

There was a large emergency service response in the area while the river was searched. Police and fire crews eventually left the scene at around 11pm.
