Scarlett Johansson explains why she refuses to join social media: ‘My ego is too fragile’

Scarlett Johansson has confessed that she doesn’t have a social media account because her “ego is too fragile”.

The actress revealed she has not followed in the footsteps of other celebrities who lap up the likes of Instagram and Twitter beacuse she “cannot deal with it”.

She told The Skinny Confidential’s Him & Her podcast: “I can’t, my ego is too fragile. I can’t deal with it, my brain is too fragile. I’m like a delicate flower.”

However, the Black Widow star confessed that she once had an Instagram account for three days, which only served to reinforce her decision to avoid social media.

She said she found the page of someone she barely knew, and after just a few minutes knew too much about their life.

“When I started realising that I’d spent 20 minutes looking at somebody’s Instagram page... someone who worked for a friend of mine,” she said.

“I now know you have a pit bull and two daughters and you live in, like, Burbank. I was like, I just wasted 17 minutes of time.”

She added: “I now feel like I should move to California, get this specific dog and change my life in all these ways.

“I felt so bad, like I was missing out on this random person’s life ― I can’t do this! I’m too fragile.

“I have so much anxiety about other things, I can’t.”

Despite this, the star does get the appeal of some platforms such as TikTok.

She said when she logs into her skin care company The Outset’s account she becomes “like a three-year-old with their mum’s phone where I get completely absorbed into it”.

Johansson added: “I like to read the customer reviews and perform them for people on TikTok, but I don’t have TikTok.

“It’s definitely fun. TikTok’s fun. Every time I see it in the office... So, that’s why I know I can’t have it.”
