A new Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer released this week gave us what might be our biggest look at the new Pokémon generation yet, including a bunch of previously unseen Pokémon, names for creatures we have managed to peek at, and a better look at how the game unfolds.
As mentioned in our biggest Violet & Scarlet announcements list, the game is fully open-world, and will allow you to undertake three separate storylines in any order that you like, including a traditional gym leader challenge, culminating in a journey up Victory Road. It all sounds perfect, if it weren’t for those cursed Transformer-like legendary Pokémon.
Still, Paldea looks like a fascinating region, and a new Pokémon generation always comes with new Pokémon to play with, of course. In this guide we’ll be breaking down all of the brand new Paldea Pokémon we know about so far.
Sprigatito
The first of the three new starter Pokémon, Sprigatito is a Grass-type cat Pokémon. It comes with a new signature move, and is easily one of cuter starters being added in Scarlet & Violet. Plus, it can use photosynthesis through its fur, which is a character trait we all wish we had.
Fuecoco
This red boy is a brand new Fire-type starter based on a sweet crocodile. Fuecoco looks a bit dumb, honestly, but he manages to be one of the cooler new starters, and we’re very excited to see what his evolved form looks like.
Quaxly
We won’t hear a bad word said about Quaxly, do you understand? The hair? The stance? The attitude? The sass? Quaxly is one of the best starters in years. No comments.
Koraidon
As outlined in our extensive legendary Pokémon complaint, Koraidon is cool. Or would be, if it weren’t for the two wheels protruding from its chest and rear end. I can’t get over them, sorry.
Miraidon
Koraidon has issues, but Miraidon is unforgivable. Sorry, I do not like the weird robot Pokémon. The hind legs turn into jet engines as it flies through the air. It sounds cool, but looks silly.
Cyclizar
Cyclizar is believed to be a pre-evolution of the legendary Pokémon that you find on the front of Scarlet & Violet boxes, and it seems likely, given their motorcycle-like appearances, and Cyclizar’s, well, name.
It is a Dragon/Normal-type, and has the move Shed Tail, which allows it to substitute itself in battle, like Abra’s Teleport.
Armarouge
A version-exclusive Pokémon, Armarouge has the ability known as Flash Fire which raises its attack stat when hit with a Fire-type move. Which would be a mistake for your opponent ordinarily, but here more than usual.
Armor Cannon is its special attack, which is a strong Fire-type attack that can also lower the defense stat of foes.
Ceruledge
Another version exclusive, Ceruledge is a Fire/Ghost-type Pokémon, and has a very cool design too.
It shares the ability Flash Fire with Armarouge, but has its own signature move, Bitter Blade, which can deal Fire-type damage to targets, while also buffing its own health.
Lechonk
Perfectly round pig Pokémon. Lechonk might’ve been one of the first Pokémon announced simply because they knew how popular it would be. Lechonk is sweet, adorable, and looks delicious, frankly. Not like we’d let anyone eat the little guy.
Pawmi
A new electric rodent on the block? Pikachu must be outraged. Pawmi is a new electric mouse that is incredibly small, and has the potential to be shockingly powerful. Plus? Cute.
Smoliv
It’s a small olive. Smoliv. Game Freak, the naming convention is perfect here. No notes.
Cetitan
The signature monster of Gym Leader Grusha, Cetitan is a hulking behemoth, and the region’s flagship Ice-type Pokémon. This creature is a literal land whale with the power of ice, and yes, it looks super cool. Paired with Thick Fat, an ability that reduces Fire-type damage, Cetitan is a force to be reckoned with.
Fidough
This is a dog made of dough. Fidough. This has already been referred to as a “meme Pokémon” or something that is overly cute to deliberately appeal to fans. Well, guess what? It’s working. Fidough is amazing. Checkmate, haters.
Grafaiai
We had Smeargle, but that wasn’t enough, now we have yet another Pokémon seemingly obsessed with paint, and it’s the Poison/Normal-type Grafaiai.
This Pokémon is nocturnal and paints trees to mark territory. Seems like this Pokémon will be a fairly rare find, so make sure to add it to your Pokédex.
Klawf
This Pokémon might look like Krabby, but it’s an all-new Rock-type known as Klawf.
This is the first Titan Pokémon announced for Scarlet & Violet. Shell Armor is its ability, which lowers its own defense, but raises speed and attack stats when below half health. Risky, but rewarding.
Wiglett
Revealed in a surprise stream to much confusion, Wiglett is noted to highly resemble Diglett. Whether Wiglett will be an evolution of Diglett or a completely seperate Pokémon remains to be seen, but people have already fallen in love with this long wiggly creature. We don’t know its typing yet either, but given it was features at a beach, a Water/Ground type is seeming likely.
Paldean Wooper
The first regional variant added to Scarlet & Violet, Paldean Wooper is an adorable new design for a gen-2 favourite. Paldean Wooper has been granted the Poison/Ground-type, and gets the Water Absorb ability to make up for its new weakness. This is also the first Poison/Ground Pokémon, after all these years.
Farigiraf
Many consider Girafarig to be one of the most underrated Pokémon of all time, but now it’s finally getting a chance to shine with this new evolution. Farigiraf is fun to say, and it looks like it might be fun to use in battle too. It is Normal/Psychic type, and has two potential abilities. Cud Chew allows it to eat its held berry twice in a single turn, and Armor Tail prevents opposing Pokémon from using priority moves like Protect or Fake Out.
Bellibolt
The partner Pokémon of Electric-type Gym Leader Iono, Bellibolt is the strangest new ‘mon revealed so far. This is supposedly a frog Pokémon, but it seems to have forgotten any froggy features other than being green. The big balls on the side of its head aren’t actually it eyes, with those being the two dots above this mouth. Whether this is adorable or horrific is in the eye of the beholder.
Greavard
This new dog Pokémon is as adorable as it is terrifying. In the reveal video, we saw a researcher playing fetch with it, only they seemed to grow tired after spending too much time near it and eventually collapsed. This is confirmed to be a Ghost-type and it seems to be based on a Komondor dog, only with a large skeletal jaw. It also has a candle on its head, drawing comparisons to Litwick.
Gimmighoul
Between this and Greavard, the designers clearly have a thing for filling Paldea with adorable Ghost-types. The idea of a treasure chest Pokémon that lures people in with gold is such an obvious idea it’s amazing it’s taken nine generations. That said, it’s been executed brilliantly. Rather than going the obvious route of making it a traditional mimmick, there’s some creativity to it with this cute little creature inside, roaming the world and gathering all the gold.
Great Tusk
The first of two Pokémon revealed during the final trailer, Iron Tusks is presumed to be an evolution of Donphan, as both this and its counterpart share similar features. It will be exclusive to Pokémon Scarlet and represents the “past”, following the themes of these games.
Iron Treads
The second of Donphan’s branching evolutions, Iron Tread represents the future, offering a much more mechanical look. It will be exclusive to Pokémon Violet.
Unamed engine Pokémon
This is a mysterious Pokémon we’ve caught a few glimpses of but it’s yet to be officially revealed. Seen as the centrepiece of Team Star’s Starmobile, this Pokémon seems to resemble an engine as it sits on the front of the Starmobile. It’s definitely a living creature, as the eye moves and promo art has shown it with a tongue, but nothing else is known about it yet.
As it’s based on an engine there are two possibilities for typing. The first is Steel/Fire since it’s a combustion engine and the Team Star boss show off in the recent trailer was a Fire-type trainer. The other possibility is Steel/Poison, which is a never-before-used typing. The purple waves on the edge of it’s limbs suggest a Poison-typing, and it would bit the idea of a polluting combustion engine.
