For three months, a 46-year-old woman in India lived with pain low in her abdomen. When a CT scan finally pointed to a cause, it suggested a perforation linked to diverticular disease in her sigmoid colon. Surgeons later found something far less common: the tip of her appendix had formed an abnormal connection directly into that part of her colon.
The condition, called an appendico-sigmoid fistula, is described in a case report published Sept. 11 in the American Journal of Case Reports by surgeons at the Institute of Surgical Gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.
