‘Sava’s Titanic,’ the century-old sunken shipwreck emerges as Europe’s rivers fall to record lows

A century-old shipwreck has resurfaced from the Sava River in Serbia as an intense drought leaves waterways across Europe at exceptionally low levels. The rusting remains of the Slovenian, a steam tugboat built in 1913, emerged near the Serbian town of Sremska Mitrovica earlier in August, revealing far more of the vessel than locals have seen in years. Serbian media have nicknamed the wreck “Sava’s Titanic”, turning an environmental warning into an unexpected historical spectacle. Historian Andrija Popovic, head of the town museum, told CBS News that there had been considerable local interest because the wreck had not been this visible for several years. The ship's appearance is part of a much wider pattern across Europe, where falling river levels have exposed forgotten warships, ancient structures and even prehistoric animal remains. According to CBS News, the drought has also disrupted shipping, power generation, agriculture and water supplies, showing how dramatically prolonged heat and dryness are reshaping the continent's rivers. The exposed wreck therefore offers a striking reminder of how changing water levels can reveal traces of the past while signalling the growing pressures facing Europe’s waterways.
