Saudi Arabia Affirms Commitment to Mediation, De-Escalation in Ukraine

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Asharq Al-Awsat

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for de-escalation and preparedness to continue mediation efforts. This came in a phone conversation held Friday.

Zelensky expressed his congratulations to the Crown Prince for his appointment as the Kingdom’s prime minister and conveyed his thanks and appreciation to the Kingdom for its vote for the UNGA resolution.

The Crown Prince also stressed that the Kingdom’s vote for the resolution emanates from its commitment to deep-rooted principles in the UN charter and international law.

He also affirmed that the Kingdom backs respect for state sovereignty, principles of good neighborliness, and resolving conflicts by peaceful means.

Zelensky voiced his appreciation for the Crown Prince’s readiness to continue his mediation efforts aiming for the resolution of the crisis.

The president expressed gratitude for the Saudi leadership’s decision to offer an additional humanitarian aid package for Ukraine of $400 million.

The aid package will contribute to alleviating the suffering of Ukrainian citizens in the wake of the crisis witnessed by their country.

Zelensky emphasized that these humanitarian aid initiatives are evidence of the Crown Prince’s keenness to alleviate the human suffering of the Ukrainian people and the Kingdom’s friendship with Ukraine.

In the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, mediation by the Crown Prince led to Russia releasing ten prisoners from Morocco, America, Britain, Sweden, and Croatia at the end of last September.

Many significant countries expressed their thanks for the humanitarian efforts led by the Crown Prince.

The US, UK, Sweden, Croatia, and Arab and Gulf countries issued statements praising Saudi mediation in the success of the prisoner exchange deal.
