Women in the small Sardinian village of Bolotana who reach age 70 have about a 13.8% chance of living to 100, compared with roughly 3.6% for American women, according to a study published Oct. 5 in Frontiers in Aging. That ranks Bolotana's women second on this measure among the places compared, behind only Hong Kong.
The finding adds a new name to the list of places researchers call longevity hotspots. It also stands out for how carefully the team checked ages, which is a common weakness in claims about unusually long-lived communities.
