The lake that shouldn't exist here
Sambhar is the largest inland salt lake in India, spread across roughly 230 square kilometres in the Nagaur and Jaipur districts of Rajasthan, and it sits in a place that geologically has no business being a lake at all. The Aravalli ranges funnel seasonal runoff into a shallow tectonic depression, and because there is no outlet, the water that collects simply stays and evaporates, leaving salt behind. Do this for long enough and you get a crust so white it reflects the sky back at you like a mirror laid flat on the earth.
